The history of this council is united to the one of Ibias, in whose territory it was included during a long time. For that reason there are very few data about this council. There are tombs remainders near La Prohida and different villages and military rest like Los Castros, I castrate miner of Larn and the Roman wake of Arnosa.
There is little documentation on its medieval time. Something, dated in 912, appears regarding the monastery of Santiago de Degaña, but its authenticity is compromised, since it is thought that it is a false documentation
In the thirteenth century, Degaña was tie to high territories of Leon as it is patent in the “Carta Puebla” (rights document) of Laciana. The relations with this council continued effective till the modern time. There is very little documentation on this zone at this time that can give us data on its structure and way of life, partly due to his entailment with high territories of Leon.
In the twentieth century XX, during the Civil War, in Degaña and Ibias the Popular Front prevails, due its influence over the new mining activities. After the armed conflict the development of the coal deposits has been its more important historical process. This development brought also remarkable city-planning changes. This way Degaña, the capital, that was the main locality, will pass to background, as opposed to the push of Cerredo, that, from being a small rural village, became the most inhabited nucleus of the council.
